This can help you to improve your career prospects and better position yourself in the job market. At Mentoc, we support you in getting your professional competencies validated in Berlin and optimising your career opportunities.

The validation in Berlin is particularly relevant as the city has a high demand for qualified professionals. Many companies are looking for employees with practical experience, regardless of formal qualifications. By validating your competencies, you can stand out from other applicants and demonstrate that you have the necessary skills for a specific position. The IHK Berlin offers a special procedure for this, which we will explain to you below.

In this article, you will learn all about professional validation in Berlin. We explain what validation means, its benefits for employees and employers, the prerequisites you need to meet, and how the validation process works. We also provide an overview of the various points of contact and support options in Berlin. This way, you can optimally prepare for your validation process and achieve your professional goals.

IHK Berlin validates competencies from 2025

From 1 January 2025, the IHK Berlin will offer a new, legally regulated validation process. This process allows individuals without formal professional qualifications to have their competencies officially recognised. The legal basis for this is § 1 paragraph 6 of the Vocational Training Act (BBiG). Thus, the IHK Berlin becomes a central point of contact for the validation of professional competencies in Berlin.

The aim of validation by IHK Berlin is to identify, document, assess, and certify your professional skills and knowledge gained through practical work. This offers numerous benefits for both employees and employers. For employees, validation means improved opportunities in the job market since they can officially demonstrate their competencies. This can lead to career advancement and higher salaries. Employers benefit from validation as it allows them to objectively assess their employees' skills and therefore better determine where they can be utilised. Additionally, validation can help reduce the skills shortage by integrating qualified but formally untrained workers into the labour market.

The process of the validation procedure at IHK Berlin includes several steps. Initially, an initial consultation takes place where your individual prerequisites and goals are discussed. Afterwards, you choose a reference profession that best matches your competencies. Then you submit an application with proof of your professional experience. The next step is the assessment of competencies, where your skills and knowledge are evaluated using various methods such as expert interviews, role plays, work samples, or presentations. Upon successful competency assessment, you will receive a certificate that officially confirms your competencies. Therefore, the validation of your competencies can be an important step for your professional future.

Participation in the validation: Requirements clearly defined

In order to participate in professional validation in Berlin, you must meet certain requirements. These requirements are both general and specific to the respective reference profession. It is important that you thoroughly check in advance whether you meet the necessary criteria to successfully complete the validation process. The Validation Service Centre offers comprehensive information and support for this purpose.

The general requirements for participating in the validation include a residence in Germany and a minimum age of 25 years. Additionally, you must not have a formal vocational qualification in the reference profession. This means that you must have acquired your skills and abilities through practical work rather than formal education. Another important aspect is relevant professional experience. You must demonstrate that you have sufficient professional experience in the reference profession to have your competencies validated. The validation of your professional experience is thus a central component of the process.

The duration of professional experience required for participation in validation depends on the length of training for the reference profession. If the reference profession has a training duration of two years, you generally require longer professional experience than for a reference profession with a training duration of three or three and a half years. It is important to note that validation is not a substitute for formal education. Rather, it is an opportunity to have your informally acquired competencies officially recognized and to enhance your career prospects. Thus, the validation of your competencies is an additional building block for your professional development.

ValiKom Transfer paves the way for new validation procedures

The ValiKom Transfer project played an important role in the development and establishment of validation procedures for informally acquired competencies. Although the project ended on 31 October 2024, it has left behind valuable insights and structures that are now utilized in the new legally regulated validation procedures. ValiKom Transfer served to develop a procedure to identify, assess, and certify the competencies of individuals without formal professional qualifications. The project results have contributed to laying the foundation for the current validation procedures.

Since 1 November 2024, the Validation Service Point has supported the Chambers of Industry and Commerce (IHKs), Chambers of Crafts (HWKs), and Chambers of Agriculture (LWKs) in implementing the new validation procedure. The service point is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research and is tasked with assisting the chambers in organizing and conducting the validation procedures. It offers the chambers, among other things, training, consultations, and informational materials to ensure that the validation procedures are carried out uniformly and to high quality standards. The Validation Service Point is therefore an important partner for the chambers in the implementation of professional validation.

The close cooperation between ValiKom Transfer, the Validation Service Point, and the chambers has contributed to establishing professional validation in Berlin and across Germany on a solid foundation. By validating your competencies, you can achieve your professional goals and enhance your career opportunities. We at Mentoc are happy to assist you in finding the validation path that suits you and successfully validating your competencies. The validation of your skills is an important step for your professional future.

Safe medical devices through validation of reprocessing procedures

In addition to the validation of professional competencies, validation also plays an important role in the field of medical devices. Particularly in the reprocessing of semi-critical medical devices, careful validation of the processes is essential to ensure patient safety. In Berlin, there are strict guidelines and requirements that healthcare facility operators must comply with. The Senate Department for Health provides detailed guidance and recommendations on this.

The manual reprocessing of semi-critical medical devices requires strict adherence to the manufacturer's instructions in accordance with DIN EN ISO 17664. In addition, detailed standard operating procedures (SOPs) must be established to ensure the reproducibility of reprocessing processes. As a rule, machine reprocessing should be prioritized since it is generally more reliable and standardized. However, if manual reprocessing is necessary, the equivalence of the results must be demonstrated through appropriate measures. The validation of reprocessing processes is therefore a crucial factor for patient safety.

An important aspect of validating reprocessing processes is the regular quantitative residual protein determination by an accredited laboratory. This checks whether the reprocessing processes are sufficiently effective in removing residual proteins from the medical devices. The threshold values for residual protein quantities are clearly defined, and if these thresholds are exceeded, appropriate measures must be taken. If there is an exceedance of 100 μg/test body, a review of the reprocessing processes must be conducted, while if there is an exceedance of 200 μg/test body, immediate measures must be taken and, if necessary, manual reprocessing must be discontinued. The legal validation of the processes is therefore of great importance.

CampusCard Validation: Locations and times at FU Berlin

Even in higher education, validation plays a role, for example, in the validation of CampusCards at the Free University of Berlin (FU Berlin). The CampusCard serves as a student ID, library card, and means of payment and must be regularly validated to maintain its validity. FU Berlin offers various locations and machines where students can validate their CampusCard. The validation of the CampusCard is thus an important part of everyday student life.

The locations for the validation of the CampusCard include Mensa II, the Student Service Centre, the Campus Library, and the University Library. Mensa II and the Campus Library offer particularly flexible validation options with their longer opening hours (7:00-22:00). The Student Service Centre, on the other hand, has specific weekday hours with shorter opening times on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. The University Library offers the most restricted opening hours (9:00-20:00, Monday-Friday). The locations for validation are thus diverse and tailored to the needs of the students.

Access to the validation machine in the Campus Library is exclusively via Fabeckstraße. In the University Library, the validation machine is located on the 1st floor, along with the payment machine. The different locations, opening hours, and access points enable students to validate their CampusCard flexibly and easily. The validation of the CampusCard is thus an important service provided by FU Berlin to facilitate students' daily academic life.
